It is common for a car manufacturer to launch a new model every year or so, but Hyundai is doing something out of the ordinary by presenting this new 2017 Hyundai Ioniq. The company is presenting three different variants that will be based on the same platform that is also found under the new Elantra model. These three variants are Gas-Electric Hybrid, Plug-In Hybrid, and the Electric. The Hyundai showcased these models in the US at the last New York Auto Show.
2017 Hyundai Ioniq: Powertrains
The three powertrain variants have different setups and configurations from each other. The Gas Electric Hybrid model uses a 1.6-liter direct-injected gasoline engine that produces a horsepower of 104 HP and torque of 109 lb-ft. This engine is going to be paired with an electric motor that is capable of producing 43 HP and it is positioned between the six-speed dual clutch gearbox and engine. A 1.56 kWh battery has also been used in this system and total output is 139 horsepower. The Plug-In Hybrid model uses the same engine as the normal hybrid variant, but the electric motor in this variant produces a higher horsepower of 60 HP. The battery that has been used with this motor also has a larger capacity of 8.9 kWh. This Plug-in version will be able to go 25 miles on electric propulsion only. In the Electric model, the setup done in the Gas Electric Hybrid and Plug-In Hybrid will not be used. Instead, an electric motor producing 102 HP with a 28 kWh battery is going to be used. A single speed reduction gear unit will be used. While its drive range stands at 110 miles.
2017 Hyundai Ioniq: Design, Features
This new 2017 Hyundai Ioniq also has an interesting body design with short overhangs, the rear fenders have been made tall. The windshield and nose have been made more conventional. The body of this new Hyundai Ioniq has a hatchback style with a certain amount of sportiness to it. High levels of aerodynamics have been featured in its outer body to maximize performance and fuel efficiency. Hyundai claims that this model will have among the lowest drag coefficient which is 0.24. Up front model will have single-frame trapezoidal grille with horizontal slats. It is positioned between sharply-angled headlights which are elongated back to the fender area. On the other hand, the electric version will feature unique grille which is actually blanking panel instead of the functional grille.
The cabin of this 2017 Ioniq is comfortable, and most of the accessories and layout of this cabin is similar to the conventional car models. Seats have been presented with a sporty design. Center stack has been nicely designed and it includes seven inch touchscreen. The models also cover smartphone integration via Apple Car Play and Android Auto. There is wireless charging functionality for mobiles. When rear seats are folded, the cargo space is up to 26.5 cubic feet. Included safety features are Lane Departure Warning, Blind Spot Detection, forward-collision warning, pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, tire pressure monitor, etc.
2017 Hyundai Ioniq: Release date, Price
This car is going to compete head to head with Ford-C Max and Toyota Prius. This new 2017 Hyundai Ioniq is expected to be available during late 2016 or in early 2017. The price of these models will be known close to their launch.
