The Mercedes-Benz G-Class has been existent for nearly forty years now. However, with time, this rugged SUV tends to get better and better, thanks to the consistent updates provided to it over time. The 2017 Mercedes G-Class also comes with fresh updates, including improvement in terms of technological features.

For Mercedes G-Class 2017, a new G550 4×4² variant has been added, and it serves as over the top flagship model. Although more powerful variants are available, 4×4² is the best model ever offered in the American market. With a heavily lifted suspension, it gets an extra ground clearance of 17 inches, as compared to standard mode. A new G-Class version also benefits from some technology upgrades that are associated with infotainment system.

This model has a simple, boxy and squared off look, which is not that surprising as it features  a go-anywhere SUV credibility and this look serves this purpose perfectly. The model received some of the appearance upgrades  for the last model year and for an upcoming version it will add new wheel design only.

On the other side the model now features upgraded infotainment system. It covers 8 inch display screen, Real-time traffic information, Android Auto and Apple Car Play smartphone integration, Connectivity options like USB/iPod docks and SIM card reader, etc.

Other updates provided to 2017 Mercedes G-Class include a new lightweight wheels featuring a matte black finish. In some markets, a G350d Professional version is also provided. This variant is designed mainly for commercial applications and off road capabilities. So, it skips some luxurious features like leather trim, chrome exterior accents, and carpeting.

However, stateside this model is available in four trims including G550, G63 AMG, G65 AMG and new G550 4×4².

Some of standard features are 19-inch wheels, bi-xenon lights, power-folding mirrors, dual-zone automatic climate control, a 10-way power heated and ventilated front seats, a power tilt and telescoping steering wheel, driver memory setting, etc.

Higher trims add upgraded upholstery, unique wheels, upgraded suspension and engines, unique trim inserts, more safety equipment, etc.

Safety Feature

In the United States and several other countries, a Mercedes-Benz emergency system is the standard feature. With this feature, in case there is an accident, system contacts the emergency response centers of automaker immediately. If necessary, information like GPS position, time of accident and direction of travel are also sent to emergency services.

Other safety features are front and rear parking sensors, rearview camera, hill hold assist, blind-zone monitoring, etc.

2017 Mercedes G-Class: Powertrains

When it comes to the powertrain, no changes have been provided to 2017 Mercedes G-Class. This means that base G550 variant will come in the United States with a 4.0 liter twin-turbo V8 engine. It is capable of generating 416 HP and 440 lb-ft of torque.

On the other hand, Mercedes AMG G63 comes with a 5.5 liter twin-turbo V8 rated at 563 HP and torque of 560 lb-ft.  The Mercedes AMG G65 comes with an engine that is capable of generating 621 HP and torque of 738 lb-ft

All engines works together with a seven-speed automatic transmission and power goes to full-time all-wheel drive system. Standard also are low range transfer case and front, center and rear electronically locking differentials.
