Soul EV is Kia’s electric car and is known to the automobile world for its massive EPA ratings. With the market flooding with green cars like Nissan Leaf, Volkswagen e-Golf, Chevrolet Bolt EV and others, Kia is having tough times to hold on to its reputation. Given this, the automaker is all set to bring out its new 2018 Kia Soul EV.
Although no official word is available about its specifications, Kia is likely to offer improved drive range. The model should also bring some changes in its exterior and interior.
Powertrain of 2018 Kia Soul EV
Previous Kia electrics came with a permanent magnet synchronous electric motor with a 27-kWh lithium-ion battery pack. This produced a power of 109 HP and a torque of 210 lb-ft. A modest 1-speed direct drive transmission system was mated to it. All this drove Kia Soul’s EPA to reach a figure of 120 mpg in city and 92 mpg on the highway. Combined value stood at 93 mpg.
Speculations suggest that the Koreans may boost its battery’s capacity to improve the EPAs further. At this moment, it is not clear what level of improvement the model will get. Its rivals have upgraded their drive range and Kia has to respond on that. The upgraded battery of the Nissan Leaf provides the range of 107 miles. The new BMW i3 returns 114 miles of range. So, we expect that Kia will try to beat these scores. Also, expect its performance ratings to see improvements as well.
The powertrain is not the only area that Kia will look to improve. With stiff competition already arriving in the market, 2018 Kia Soul EV will likely be bigger and better this time. It will continue to be marketed as a small station wagon but may see roomier interiors and enhanced cargo hold.
Wheelbase could be more than the current 101.2 inches while its overall length could be increased over the 163 inches. Expect cargo volume to be around 18.8 cubic feet with rear seats intact and 49.5 inches otherwise.
2018 Kia Soul EV: Exterior and interior designs
Do not expect any stark changes here. However, a few modifications are likely. No front grille this time also as powertrain is electric, but Kia continues to maintain the structure. Headlights of 2018 Kia Soul EV may be sharper and should come with LED fitting to save power. Front bumper with fog lights will be body colored.
Its rear will remain the same with a slightly redesigned tailgate. Bumper here will be body colored as well. Interiors will feature refreshed materials and model could also improve the list of available features.
Technology and Safety
Infotainment is likely to get enhanced features. There will also be standard features like keyless entry and ignition, automatic headlights, a heated tilt-and-telescopic steering wheel, satellite radio, etc. Higher-spec versions will add upgraded infotainment, navigation, leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, a sunroof, etc.
The model should also expand the safety rig with new advanced systems.
2018 Kia Soul EV: Arrival, Price
Expect a price tag of around $33,000 for the base 2018 Kia Soul EV and the release date of somewhere around 2018.
