Mercedes’ former GL-Class is today’s GLS, but you probably knew that already. However, what you don’t know is that the amazing SUV is receiving a complete makeover in 2018. Yes, the 2018 Mercedes-Benz GLS is coming totally redesigned and undoubtedly better than today’s model. We know that because we managed to catch a testing mule. Still, the spotted vehicle is completely hidden beneath the heavy camouflage and we can’t see what’s new on the exterior. However, our insider explained to us what happening behind the curtains.
2018 Mercedes-Benz GLS: Engine and Transmission Options
Judging by the information we have, the 2018 GLS will likely continue to use four different engines. The options won’t be all-new but updated only. The base model currently has a twin-turbo 3.0-liter V-6 mill with 362 horsepower. The boosted option would probably add around 10 percent, which gives us a round figure of 400 horsepower. On the other hand, the V8 model will use a 4.7-liter twin-turbo unit which will replace today’s 449 hp with 500 ponies. The topping model would likely keep stunning 5.5-liter V-8 that should be capable of delivering up to 600 horsepower.
The mighty SUV will also keep a single diesel option, which will get some extra horses as well. The biggest news could be the arrival of the 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLS hybrid. This version will reportedly get a 3.0-liter V-6 and an electric motor. The system will comfortably produce around 450 horsepower and will be equipped with wireless charging. In any case, no matter which one you choose, you will get a nine-speed automatic transmission and 4Matic all-wheel drive. Find out more about 2019 New SUVs.
As for the body changes, it’s very important to mention that the 2018 Mercedes-Benz GLS is definitely getting a different platform that will have a large impact on SUV’s curb weight. Yes, Mercedes’ fully redesigned S-Class high-riding vehicle will be lighter and more rigid that before. It will also sport a sleeker exterior styling that’s going to feature a dynamic front end and sexier rear hatch. The stunning three-row crossover SUV will get a chunkier grille and slimmer headlights in the front, as well as an even bigger front bumper from the current. Around back, the fascinating model should more pronounced hatch, which might bring more interior space. Of course, the car manufacturer won’t skip the chance to add a pair of new taillights and redesigned exhaust system.
SUV’s New Features Will Be Amazing
The current model features an amazing interior already, so we can’t imagine what they can do better. However, our insider claims that the 2018 Mercedes-Benz GLS should get even better materials inside. Plus, it will sport the same semi-autonomous features as the new E-Class. Benz’s new Drive Pilot technology can compete with Tesla’s autopilot without any problems. It changes lanes automatically, follows the speed limit written on signposts, and reaches 130 mph by itself. There is also Remote Parking Pilot, which gives owners the option to automatically park the car via a smartphone app. The SUV will be able to brag with the outstanding Burmester audio system as well.
Starting Price and Arrival
The redesigned 2018 Mercedes-Benz GLS will be officially introduced in early 2018. The car manufacturer will have to raise SUV’s starting price, so we expect nothing less from $70,000.
