Mercedes recently introduced the updated SL-Class. The refreshed sports car looks pretty charming, but it’s nothing compared to the next generation model. Yes, the German car manufacturer is working already on the completely redesigned model. It will come next year as the 2018 Mercedes-Benz SL. The seventh-generation SL-Class isn’t getting just a new exterior, but also an all-new platform. The carmaker would reportedly leave the engineering business to the AMG department. This way, the next SL should be separated from the S-Class Coupe.
2018 Mercedes-Benz SL Gets New Platform and Engine
According to information we have, the 2018 Mercedes-Benz SL will ride on the MSA platform. The Modular Sports car Architecture is basically for Mercedes’ all rear-wheel-drive sports cars, so it should underpin the next SLC as well.
Anyway, the new chassis will definitely make the next-generation SL significantly lighter. It will host plenty of lightweight materials and what’s more important, the roadster is losing its hard-top roof. The soft top isn’t as good as the hard top, but it will reduce weight, which will improve car’s fuel economy.
The completely redesigned 2018 Mercedes-Benz SL will get just a nine-speed automatic gearbox. No, there won’t be any kind of manual gearbox. On the other hand, you will be able to choose between three engine options. The base model will continue to use a 3.0-liter V6 engine, while the topping SL gets an updated version of its twin-turbo 6.0-liter V-12.
The biggest change under the hood will happen to the model that currently uses a twin-turbocharged 4.7-liter V-8 unit. This mill will be replaced with an impressive twin-turbo 4.0-liter. The monstrous V8 will be capable of delivering a whopping output of 510 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of twist that deploys between 1,750 and 4,750 rpm. That’s not all you will see from the new engine. If the car manufacturer decides to use engine’s all potential, we could see the 2018 Mercedes-Benz SL with the V8 that pumps out the insane 600 horsepower and 664 lb-ft of torque.
In contrast to today’s model that offers Active Body Control just as the option, the new version will get that as a standard part of the equipment. The system is so special because it quickly adjusts car’s suspension because it reduces body roll in corners. It also lowers the vehicle at high-speed driving.
Exterior and Interior Redesign
We can’t really say what’s going to be changed on the exterior and interior because the German manufacturer still hides the prototype. However, we are pretty confident that the soft-top roof won’t be the biggest news. No, the carmaker included AMG department to make the new generation SL far more attractive from the current one, so they will definitely do that. Of course, the ends will be tweaked with new lights and bumper. The hood might be more aggressive and longer.
The 2018 Mercedes-Benz SL could come wider as well, but this isn’t confirmed yet. As for the interior redesign, well we can’t really imagine that the roadster could look better inside from the current model. However we are sure that Mercedes prepares something even better.
Estimated Price and Arrival
As we said, the completely redesigned 2018 Mercedes-Benz SL will be introduced in 2018. The official debut should be at the 2018 Frankfurt Motor Show. In any case, the base version should cost around $90,000, while the range-topping SL could be priced over $220K.
