Although not considered to be the prettiest car in the Mercedes line-up, its GLA class has seen stable and decent sales since its launch in 2015. Unveiled as the company’s smallest compact crossover, Mercedes is getting ready to launch the refreshed version of this vehicle – the 2018 Mercedes GLA. Although the Germans claim to retain most of its design aspects intact, it’s time to put this crossover under the knife.
2018 Mercedes GLA: Design
The Germans have gone with the flow and most of their previous design elements prevail in 2018 Mercedes GLA. These include trademark Mercedes grille with central logo placement. Also, this vehicle has got larger front bumper housing the air intakes and fog lamps along with standard front fenders and body decals.
What is really expected to stand out in Mercedes GLA 2018 are its lights. The previous bi-xenon headlights give way to new LED headlamps that Mercedes claims have a color tone quite close to daylight. New LED tail lights have also been provided with minimum tweaks to its mirror housings, front pillars and rear lip spoiler to improve aerodynamics.
The AMG trim on the other hand gets a new diffuser insert at the rear, along with a specific lip for the hatch spoiler. This AMG comes as an all-black variant with yellow bordering giving it that sportier touch.
That heritage chrome grille makes way for a premium mesh finish along with larger inlets at both ends. It uses larger 19 inch aluminum matte-black wheels with chrome inserts as compared to the 18 inch standard alloy wheels used by the base version of 2018 GLA.
While AMG takes its all-black theme to the interiors as well, its base variant has opted for standard themes. Passengers will be treated with upholstered leather seats and dash. The power adjustable driver seats come with 8 way adjustable passenger seats. A 7 inch touchscreen covers all infotainment options with Bluetooth, Android Auto Sync and Apple Car Play. An eight speaker surround sound system comes with wireless streaming, window grid antenna and Garmin Navigation System.
Having covered all aspects of design and power, it’s time to lay some emphasis on the safety of 2018 GLA. Standard features include all round air bags, ABS and Electronic Stability Control (ESC). In addition to this, forward collision alert, lane keep assist and blind spot monitoring system has also been provided.
2018 Mercedes GLA: Performance
Mercedes GLA 2018 provides the usual split of a couple of trims, namely its base GLA 250 and that sportier sibling, the Mercedes AMG GLA45.
GLA 250 produces 208 HP and 258 lb-ft of torque from a 2.0-litre inline 4 turbocharged engine. Its bigger brother, the AMG receives a considerable power surge of 375 HP along with 330 lb-ft of torque. Due to this, 2018 Mercedes GLA AMG has more affinity to the track than for city roads.
As a result of a bigger engine fuel efficiency gets compromised at 22/28 city/highways. The GLA 250 however offers an EPA rating of 24 mpg in cities and 33 mpg in highways. The transmission system remains the 7-speed dual-clutch automatic wit sportier variant in the AMG GLA45.
2018 Mercedes GLA: Arrival, Price
The Mercedes GLA 2018 will likely go against the Buick Encore, Range Audi Q3 and the very popular BMW X1. The competition will be tough after its release in the fall of 2017. $33,000 is what the 2018 Mercedes GLA base model has been priced at while the AMG being a bit expensive starts at $50,000. Only time will prove how this crossover proves its mettle.
