Volkswagen is definitely working on a full-size sedan. Moreover, the German car manufacturer confirmed the arrival of the 2018 VW Phaeton in the U.S. In case you don’t remember, the predecessor has been offered in North America, but the sale didn’t go well. Or better to say, this was one of the biggest mishits from Volkswagen ever. Still, according to information we have, the new generation Phaeton will be something completely different, because they have the right formula this time.
2018 VW Phaeton: Engines and Transmission
Some earlier reports were suggesting that the 2018 VW Phaeton might offer some more efficient engine than the predecessor. However, taking into account last year’s diesel scandal, there will be no oil-burner under the hood of VW’s flagship sedan without any doubt. Instead, the carmaker will try with a regular gasoline engine and possibly with a plug-in hybrid drivetrain.
The only gasoline option for the 2018 Volkswagen Phaeton will be either a six- or an eight-cylinder unit. If you want our opinion, we would like to see the sedan paired with an amazing 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8, which is capable of producing up to 450 horsepower. Of course, regardless the fact which one option come, it will be mated to standard all-wheel drive and eight-speed automatic transmission.
As for the 2018 VW Phaeton Hybrid, it should be fitted with a powertrain that combines 330-hp twin-turbo V-6 and a 136-hp electric motor. Altogether, the system will deliver 462 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque. This drivetrain will be paired with all four wheels through a ZF-sourced eight-speed dual-clutch automatic too.
New Platform and Design
Volkswagen’s flagship sedan will host a number of changes inside, out, and under the skin. More precisely, it will ride on a new platform, which will improve car’s dynamics and shed some serious weight. According to the latest rumors, the 2018 VW Phaeton might use pretty much the same features as Audi’s A8 sedan. These two will not look alike of course. However, they will share the same bones and footprint. Plus, we expect to see a level of luxury inside as well.
Price Range and Arrival
In case you are wondering when it will arrive or how much it will cost the all-new 2018 VW Phaeton, we are it will be introduced early next year. The exact price is unknown at the moment yet don’t expect anything below $70,000 for the base model. Of course, the fully loaded hybrid full-size sedan from Volkswagen will cost at least $100,000.
