In its segment, Volkswagen Tiguan is somewhat a trailblazer. It was amongst the first modern premium compact crossover when it hit the market back in 2007. Being one of the first, it certainly opened the door for a lot of its rivals. Since then, this crossover has languished in the face of its rivals. This is because Tiguan has not been as dynamic as it was initially intended to be. For a major part of its existence, VW has kept Tiguan’s design completely muted. With 2018 VW Tiguan, the car manufacturer is bringing this SUV as the all-new vehicle to the US market.
New for 2018:
The all-new Tiguan was shown almost a year earlier but it comes to the US for the 2018 model year. The reason is the long-wheel base model whose development is waiting. Also, the plant in Puebla, Mexico is expanding its capacity for the new model.
On the other hand, the Tiguan will bring improvements in all areas. Updated styling, interior and technology come with improved suspension and engines. The hybrid version is also possible.
2018 VW Tiguan: Design, Interior, Features
Both Tiguan models will sit on the flexible MQB platform and will get new brand’s SUV design. Crisp lines and edges will make its appearance boxier and more muscular. It will also be more spacious and better equipped.
On the other hand, this upcoming long-wheelbase version will have increased dimensions, with roughly 7 inches of additional length and an increased wheelbase of about 6.5 inches. That will allow model to fit the third seat bench.
All models of 2018 VW Tiguan will also come with a multifunctional terrain dependent selector, which features two off-road settings and a snowfall setting. It offers personalized configurations for steering, revocation and powertrain performance.
This is the first time that such feature will be available on a VW model. Considering that such feature is available only in luxury SUVs, 2018 Tiguan certainly seems to be promising.
The sheer volume and quality of technological enhancements in this vehicle is also impressive. With features like a 12.3 inch Active Info Display, three zone climate control, heated seats and much more, technological offerings of 2018 Tiguan are sure to add convenience for both passengers and driver.
It will have a 3-row seating arrangement with same dimensions for cargo storage. Ample space is offered for both passenger and driver. Interior also features some design changes with a few stylish touches being added. Also, the overall material quality is expected to improve.
2018 VW Tiguan: Engine options
Available engine options with 2018 VW Tiguan include both diesel and gasoline engines. As far as the gasoline engine is concerned, you can expect a 2.0-liter TSI engine with approximately 183 HP of output. This engine is paired with Aisin eight-speed automatic transmission. There will be a slight improvement in fuel economy.
The model will also be availbe with a 2.0-liter turbodiesel TDI four-cylinder engine. It will be good for around 150 hp.
There is also possibility that VW will offer the plug-in hybrid version. It should feature the similar form as the powertrain presented on the Tiguan GTE active concept.
The main rivals of 2018 Tiguan are Toyota RAV4, Mazda CX-5, Subaru Forester, Honda CR-V, Ford Escape, etc.
