2019 Ford Explorer: Redesign, Platform, Release Date

One of the top sellers in US is ready to be presented to the world. It is the brand new 2019 Ford Explorer. The new Ford has been caught during its testing in Michigan. Despite the heavy disguise, we managed to see some interesting changes in almost every segment of the vehicle. There are some rumors that it might appear at the 2017 L.A. Auto Show. However, it is more likely that it will make the world`s premiere at Detroit Auto Show next year.

New Explorer will represent the next generation model. We can expect evolutionary design, new platform and some changes considering its powertrain. With all these expected improvements, we can say with no doubt that this mid-size crossover SUV will continue the tradition of best selling models in its segment.  The 2019 Explorer will compete against Hyndai Santa Fe, Honda Pilot, Toyota Highlander, Kia Sorento, GMC Acadi and a couple of others.

2019 Ford Explorer powertrain and performance

2019 Ford Explorer is expected to be powered with two types of engines. The base is a  2.3-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine. This one is able to make 280 horsepower and the torque of 310 pound-feet. The next option will, most likely, be a 3.5-liter V-6 EcoBoost engine. This unit will be able to make 290 horses and 255 pound-feet of torque. As for the transmission, the current model is paired with a six-speed automatic. However, latest news say that it might get a new nine-speed automatic gearbox this time.

Moreover, because of the new platform, the new Ford might be available with front-, rear- ad all-wheel drive system. But, we probably won`t  see it with RWD. For now, we assume that the FWD will be standard and AWD system will be optional. Automaker promises better fuel efficiency too.

Design of exterior and interior

First of all, 2019 Ford Explorer will no longer ride on D4 platform. Now, it is going to be underpinned with the Ford`s new D6 platform made for larger models. It has a front-wheel drive based design, but AWD could be optional too. This platform uses lightweight materials such as aluminum which will affect Explorer`s weight. This means that this new model will be lighter than before despite the increased size. The result will be improved efficiency and general performance.

When it comes to exterior design, 2019 Ford Explorer will maintain its recognizable boxy appearance. However, we can expect many changes all over the body, especially on the front end. So, we will notice new hood and bumper. The headlamps are going to be revised too. The rear end will undergo some changes as well. What we know so far, is that it will feature new taillights.

Speaking of the interior, because of the new platform, the new Ford will offer more space inside. It will have three rows of comfortable seats. The cabin will now provide more head and legroom. Furthermore, we can expect plenty of safety and infotainment features. Unfortunately, because of the lack of information, we have to wait the Company official announcement to find out more.

Release date and price

2019 Ford Explorer is scheduled to hit the market in the summer of 2018. As for the price, there is no official information. But, it will definitively cost more than the starting price of tits forerunner which is around $32,000.
