Mercedes’ new generation GLE SUV is still pretty far away from the official debut. However, the latest spy shots show that the car manufacturer knows what’s doing. In contrast to some earlier camouflaged models, which were using the current shell, the testing vehicle is actually the first production prototype of the 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLE. We know that because of some pretty unique details that can’t be found on today’s model.
2019 Mercedes-Benz GLE: Redesign and Features
Judging by the pictures we got, the next generation GLE will definitely look more aggressive. This especially refers to the front-end styling, which is getting a totally new look and plenty of brilliant details. For instance, the front fascia sports a redesigned and massive grille and really angular headlights with LED treatment. As you may notice, the 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLE appears to be more rugged. This is due to the new and more pronounced wheel arches. The SUV won’t become as smooth as the biggest rivals, but we have to admit that looks more rounded than the predecessor. It might get pretty much the same treatment as the smaller GLC. In the back, the vehicle features all-new taillights, which seem to be slimmer yet larger, and a new bumper with redesigned exhaust layout.
Inside, the 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLE is definitely getting an all-new dashboard. The carmaker will add a dual-screen design and a smartphone-like infotainment system. Of course, the crossover will have Mercedes’ semi-autonomous driving system and a bunch of safety aids. The carmaker will use better quality materials and special leather for the new upholstery – something similar to the all-new E-Class.
2019 Mercedes-Benz GLE: Performance
The new generation GLE will ride on a completely new architecture, so-called MHA. The platform will support all-Mercedes’ SUVs from GLC up. Of course, the G-Class will be excluded from the list, because we are talking about the iconic off-roader that needs totally different characteristics. Anyway, the new architecture will enable more engine options for the 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLE. The SUV will get completely new inline-four and six units, starting from a 2.0-liter turbo that delivers 241 horsepower. The manufacturer will also add some kind of hybrid or plug-in hybrid powertrain, while AMG division is definitely getting a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 engine. The mighty mill sports a pair of twin-scroll turbochargers which are capable of delivering 563 horsepower and 553 lb-ft and 603 horsepower and 627 lb-ft, depending on trims. Engines will be paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission and 4MATIC all-wheel drive system.
Engine and Price
The redesigned mid-size luxury SUV will become available for sale sometime next year, most likely in the first half. The price of the all-new 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLE will start from around $53K, but the range-topping AMG might cost twice more.
